Workshop Secrets — Working with Fiberglass and Resin

The newest charge for my ongoing hulk scale Fokker Triplane build, now that it is all covered, is to sign and finish all the wood tools like a Strut fairings and a alighting gear’s Sub-Wing structures. Fiberglass cloth and Finishing creosote provides a well-spoken underling aspect for authority and embellished finishes and it greatly increases the continuance of a tools being finished. Here’s some Tips how we do it.

Supplies and Material

You’ll need, Pacer’s 2-part Z-Poxy Finishing Resin (, denatured alcohol, blending cups and stir sticks, paper towels, and fiberglass cloth. For all my “glassing” jobs, we use 3/4oz. (per sq. yard) customary wobble cloth. we get it from a association called Thayarcraft. we use their Type 106 cloth (.73oz) and it is really pretty priced. The cloth is really excellent and forms straightforwardly around winding shapes. Extremely easy to apply.

You’ll also need 220, 320 and 150 courage silt paper, and when it comes time for priming, some quick-drying automotive Spot and Glazing putty will make discerning work of a tiny pin holes that will uncover up.

For stream pricing, check with Thayercraft Inc., 710 W. Green Dr., High Point, NC, 27260; (800) 218-1375;

Start by slicing a cloth to size. It comes on a hurl core and we simply lay it on a purify slicing aspect and use  a new, pointy hobby blade to make a purify cut with minimal snags.

Above are a dual halves of a Sub-Wing Structure. we have sanded it well-spoken and combined filler to any dings and vast seams. A discerning purify with a hook cloth creates it prepared for a Fiberglass cloth.

I use throw-away blending cups. A throw of balsa creates a accessible stirring stick. Just use a purify crater and copiousness of paper towels.

Mix equal tools of PartA, PartB, and denatured Alcohol.

Drape a cloth over a partial and request a skinny frame of creosote down a center. This helps reason it in place while adding some-more resin.

Apply a second frame of creosote 90 degrees to a first. This starts swelling a cloth out for a well-spoken finish.

Now supplement dual erratic strips of creosote so we have a Union Jack settlement shown above. This smooths out wrinkles and lax patches.

When we get to a edges supplement some-more creosote to form a stone along a pointy dilemma radius’. This seals a wood. Now set a partial aside on tip of some blocks to lift it off a workbench and let a creosote heal overnight. When cured, we can trim divided a cloth and creosote from a edges by rubbing it with 220 courage sandpaper. You can afterwards cover theother side of a Sub-Wing with another square of fiberglass cloth. Set aside and let dry overnight.

After a second vast side is trimmed, request smaller seperate pieces to a left and right ends in a same way. Allow to heal and trim divided a rubbish cloth with 220 courage sandpaper.

The front partial of a Sub-Wing is lonesome with a singular square of cloth draped over both a tip and bottom surfaces. Apply creosote along a heading corner and afterwards onto them tip and bottom surfaces.

Allow a additional cloth to furnish off a partial until a creosote has cured. Then use some 220 courage sandpaper to trim divided a rubbish material.

Sand by a cloth and creosote along a pointy edges and it will cut by a cloth so a rubbish partial drops free. Don’t use a pointy blade as we will always cut into a wood.

Sand during a pointy angle to a corner and a creosote filled fiberglass cloth will tumble divided but most timber being exposed. Sandpaper is a apparatus to use.

As with a categorical partial of a Sub-Wing, a front square ends are lonesome with seperate pieces of cloth. Use a same techniques as shown above.

Mix tiny batches and if we have any left over, go on and use it to cover other parts. You can also use a creosote to fuel explanation engine and fuel tank compartments. No sence in throwing divided ideally good churned resin. Maximize your use buy meditative forward and scheming a tools of your indication wanting finishing.

When sanding a creosote beads along a pointy edges, use a steel sanding bar for a well-spoken straight, edge. Apply some some-more creosote if there are any unprotected timber areas along a pointy edges.

Once all a tools are lonesome and a creosote has marinated and a cloth has been trimmed, skuff a surfaces with 220 courage sandpaper and request a second covering of thinned Finishing Resin and concede to heal overnight. Another sanding with 320 courage sandpaper, and you’re done.

That’s it! Stay tuned as we will shortly be decoration and portrayal tools of a Fokker Triplane!

Shop Tip: As we mentioned before with my covering tips, use a chemical restraint palm cream like “Invisible Gloves” while regulating any well-off and finishing resins. Afterwards we can purify adult with amiable soap and water.
